Summer-long Fun in the Children's Garden
We're celebrating the 5th birthday of the Lena Meijer Children's Garden all summer long.
June 8–August 30
Daily Challenges, 11 am–12 pm
Mondays, Outdoor Artists’ Studio
Observe professional artists drawing, painting and sculpting with clay. Learn how they use the materials, then join the fun and make your own art.
Tuesdays, Birthday Party Games
Participate in a hula hoop contest at the Five Rings sculpture, a bean bag toss at the Juggler and Acrobat Clown sculptures, then make your own party hat.
Wednesdays, Fish Out of Water
Find five fish in fifty seconds. It’s harder than you think (they’re cleverly hidden). Ready, set, go!
Thursdays, Alice in the Children’s Garden Wonderland
Enjoy a unique version of Alice in Wonderland, with actress Laura Fisher. From the white rabbit and the talking flowers to the un-birthday party, have fun with Alice, and predict the ending to the story.
Fridays, Music in the Maze
Experience music and sound with educator, entertainer and trumpet player John Robinson. Participate in activities based on sounds from nature, sculpture and people.
Saturdays and Sundays, Weekend Surprise
Enjoy popular daily challenges including a worm hunt, Tinker Toy bridge-building, weaving on a loom or a family checkers tournament.
Daily Story-Time, Weekdays at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm
Come down to the Story-Telling Amphitheater and experience books, finger plays, puppets and props. Enjoy favorites such as Diary of a Worm, Turtle’s Race with Beaver and The Very Busy Spider, and celebrate our 5th birthday with The Birthday Box, The Secret Birthday Message.
Topiary Birthday Treasures
Ian Warnock, Lead Horticulturist, Children’s Garden, along with a team of devoted horticulture volunteers, have created birthday topiaries for this summer: a giant birthday cake, gift boxes in all shapes and sizes, a fanciful carousel and an “un-birthday” table complete with Alice, the Mad Hatter and Queen of Hearts! Pay attention to the plant material used for each, and remember to bring your camera when you visit. The topiaries provide photo opportunities galore!
4th of July Stroller Parade, Happy Birthday USA Saturday, July 4, 1:00 pm
Celebrate America’s birthday! Decorate your strollers, your children and yourselves for our annual Children’s Garden parade (dolls and stuffed animals are welcome too). Prizes will be awarded for the three most original creations.
