The Artist as Activist
Elizabeth Van Arragon, Ph.D., Contemporary Art Historian
Are you curious about contemporary art? This lecture, entitled The Artist as Activist, will help you learn more.
Artists do not exist in a vacuum—they are part of a society. And often they are responding to their context and contributing to wider
conversations that question the social values, expectations, and conventions that are part of their everyday lives. Politically charged,
cathartic, antagonistic, or reflective, artists such as Ai Weiwei probe, challenge, and seek to create something new and positive. They play a distinct role as both artist and activist, at times even without meaning to.
