Once an assistant to Henry Moore, Caro began his career in a figurative tradition and eventually focused on the non-objective style for which he is internationally known. Emma Sail was the beginning of his more open, “calligraphic” work with steel, resembling drawing in space. Interestingly, he never made preparatory sketches or maquettes, and about this he said, “I am drawing with my torch.”
