Dietrich Klinge’s relationship with Meijer Gardens is related to both permanent installations and temporary exhibitions. During his first visit, the artist was impressed with the botanical collections and was inspired to explore a new direction in his work—that of a rooted bulb coming into life. Although Klinge’s process of carving wood roughly then translating that form into bronze remains, Model for Big Sculpture II describes a sense of slow movement or growth that was a first for his repertoire which traditionally depicted quiet figures posed without any sense of movement.
