Renowned British sculptor Anthony Caro had a prodigious and prolific career. His abstract assemblages are well known — especially large-scale pieces intended to rest on the ground. However, his "ledge pieces" are highly inventive. In examples like this, he challenges both the traditional idea of sculpture placed atop a pedestal as well as notions of gravity that ground heavy objects like steel sculpture. This work is carefully balanced across the edge of the pedestal engaging both top and sides.
