Pepper's close friend and colleague David Smith was among the first to exhibit "spray" paintings but they were never as layered in color or complex in design as these works. Although Pepper had learned some airbrush techniques while a student at Pratt, this series is more closely related to her work experimenting with painting some of her metal sculptures during this period.
