During an intense period of activity in the mid-1980s, Pepper worked energetically on a series of large scale drawings with thick layers of color. Central in each drawing is an image based on one of her sculptures of the period, rendered in a stylized, two-dimensional form over which the artist has made layers and layers of strokes in both pastel and paint. As a result, the form based on the sculpture is veiled and at times disappears. These are among Pepper's most mysterious and evocative works from her two-dimensional repertoire.
