Untitled (Study for Contrappunto)

This is the earliest known surviving drawing in the collection that is related to a specific sculpture. It is a detailed study for the kinetic portion of her sculpture Contrappunto. This was Pepper's first large-scale commissioned work in the United States. It remains in situ at the entrance of the Avon building in Midtown Manhattan. In addition to the sculptural elements shown, Pepper's handwritten notes are also included at the bottom left.
