The Gardens Experience

Gwen Frostic Woodland Shade Garden

Gwen Frostic, an artist from Benzonia, Michigan, is best known for her block prints of native plants, animals, and poetry. Through the generosity of this talented Michigan artist, the Gwen Frostic Woodland Shade Garden was dedicated in June 1998.

The tall trees in the garden provide a canopy of shade in summer months. Plants selected for this area perform best in shady conditions and must tolerate heavy clay soils. Plants are also chosen to provide year-round interest. Trillium, goldenrod, geranium, and baneberry are just a few of the flowers planted here.

Spring is the peak season for the woodland shade garden, with daffodils, wildflowers and flowering shrubs bursting into bloom. Hydrangeas, hostas, and fringed bleeding heart offer a feast for the eyes throughout the summer, with several bronze sculptures featured as integral parts of the landscape.

Throughout the woodlands, wooden benches provide respite from the heat of the sun. Walk the shady trails of the Gwen Frostic Woodland Shade Garden and learn to slow the pace of the outer world.
