Abstracting Nature: Photography

This slide illustrated class will demonstrate the tools and techniques for creating abstract photographs. Focus will be on learning to see abstract compositions by identifying design elements like form, shape, and texture. Creative camera and lens techniques will be explored as well as methods to optimize abstract photos with the computer. Time will be allowed at the end of class for independent photographing outside.

Infused Oils and Vinegars

Learn to combine citrus fruit and herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and others to make unique infused oils and vinegars. Make a bottle of herbal vinegar to take home to enhance the flavor of food or as a topping for hors d’ oeuvres. Samples and recipes included.

Astronomy Night: The Spring Skies

This class has been rescheduled to MAY 2nd. Any questions, please call Molly at 616-975-3184. Take a tour of the night skies with astronomer, Jim Foerch. Observe through telescopes and build a planisphere to predict the timing of constellations. Listen to sories about springtime constellations and learn how ancient farmers used the constellations.

Create an Erodium Bonsai

Experience level: Beginner to Intermediate

Create a “mame” bonsai, one that can be held in the palm of your hand, using Erodium, also known as alpine geranium. Rake out the soil, cut back the roots and pot it into a small pot. Then clean out the foliage to expose the trunk and discover the style for your new bonsai. This plant, ideal for beginners, can be grown on a windowsill, where you can enjoy its tiny leaves and small flowers. All materials provided.

Bring-Your-Own-Tree Workshop

Experience level: Intermediate to Advanced

Bring one or two bonsai and work on styling or refining your trees with expert guidance from guest artist Peter Tea. Peter will discuss each tree, give each student an assignment, and then provide one-on-one assistance. Bring your own tools and copper wire (for conifers) or aluminum wire (for deciduous and broadleaf evergreens).
