Scout Troops

We support the scouting tradition.

The scouting tradition emphasizes a love of nature, an appreciation of the arts and a commitment to the good stewardship of the environment. Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park shares these values and is pleased to support the Girl and Boy Scouts of America through discounted admission rates and special programs.

Ai Weiwei at Meijer Gardens: Natural State

Scouts will practice their critical thinking skills as they explore the art of Ai Weiwei, internationally renowned Chinese artist and activist.  Troops will search for selected works of art in the galleries, conservatories, and public areas and will look carefully at each piece, photograph some, and think about the important ideas they convey.  Adults will receive insightful “did you know” facts for each stop that will help stimulate conversation and understanding of the artworks. Big ideas such as empathy, free speech, value, and freedom will be explored.  In addition, scouts will create a “freedom dragon” inspired by Ai Weiwei’s artwork and heritage.

This event is a natural tie-in to “World Thinking Day,” a day of international friendship that focuses on issues that affect girls and young women.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see and understand the power of art and ideas in a landmark exhibition featuring one of the most acclaimed artists in the world today!

As an added bonus, scouts will also enjoy hundreds of tropical butterflies as they visit Ai Weiwei’s pieces in the Tropical Conservatory.
Allow about two hours for your visit and reserve a check-in time between 10 am and noon.  The $6 per scout cost includes all materials and admission; a patch is not included.
