Works on paper by sculptors are a critical and expansive part of the permanent collection at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Although much less well known than the sculpture collection itself, these drawings and prints, many with ties to the sculptures themselves, are a unique treasury of ideas and imagery. More than 40 selected major works by more than 20 sculptors represented in our permanent collection ranging from Magdalena Abakanowicz and Anthony Caro, to Louise Nevelson and George Segal, to Antony Gormley and Roxy Paine will be featured from January 31 to April 27, 2014.
Preparatory drawings created in anticipation of and master drawings and prints completed as meditations after completed works of sculpture will be featured. In addition, life studies and compositional sketches by leading Modern and Contemporary sculptors for whom works on paper are significant to their repertoire will also be included. Many of the works included will be shown for the first time, including numerous gifts to the permanent collection from the artists themselves given in honor of sculpture enthusiast and patron Frederik G. H. Meijer (1919-2011).
