Mark Mennin’s sculpture seeks to make us more stone “literate”—better able to appreciate and read this ubiquitous material. The distinct physical traits of various stone, formed over millions of years, contain clues to its geologic and geographic origins. Mennin has remained fascinated with this primal matter for over 40 years, finding within it limitless possibilities for creative expression. As he states, “Stone provides the challenge of making work that’s contemporary and relevant out of something that has more historical baggage than any other material.” Indeed, the artist’s masterful and playful stone sculptures offer fresh insights into this ancient artistic medium.
