Globes recur throughout Yinka Shonibare CBE’s art, whether serving as surrogates for human heads, or used as foundations on which sculptural figures are made to tread carefully. In this talk, we will consider the ways in which Shonibare’s multivalent engagements with planetary forms extend ideas and themes associated with Pan-Africanism, a cultural and political movement founded in the early twentieth century that calls for self-determination and transnational solidarity among Black peoples.
