Until Wolfgang's death in 2007, the husband and wife team of Wolfgang Kubach and Anna Maria Kubach–Wilmsen were active as both stone carvers and installation artists. They became well known for their use of stones carefully selected from quarries across the world, prized for their varieties of color, veining and density. Carving scrolls and books—-especially the latter—became a specialty for the artists. Playing on the idea of "marbleized" paper traditionally found inside the covers of books and manuscripts, here the marble and other materials become the book themselves. Symbolically, they are testimony to the traditions and the durability of knowledge.
