Night and Day

In this piece by the celebrated American artist Marshall Fredericks, the passage of time is personified with two figures, representing night and day. Night is a graceful female, who floats upon a swan and carries a small bird in her hand. Day, the male figure, is more muscular and sits upon an otter hunting a fish. Such allegorical representations of time appear frequently throughout the history of art.
