One of the elements that encouraged a more abstracted approach to work for was a change in Beverly Pepper's drawing techniques in 1960. Rather than drawing with pen and ink in a traditional manner, she began to draw with sticks and the ink bottle stopper. Such instruments opened her forms, and small strokes gave way to more powerful gestures.
