Anthony Caro
Emma Sail
Although British sculptor Anthony Caro began his career in the figurative tradition, contact with Abstract Expressionism in America redirected the course of his career. Utilizing a variety of materials, especially steel, Caro quickly emerged as a leading abstract sculptor of his era and one of the most influential British artists of the past century. Emma Sail is one of his most open, “calligraphic” works, wherein the artist felt the action of manipulating and welding steel was like drawing in space.
