Tom Hillis
Pine Stumps
Fred Meijer had a great interest in recording history. Tom Hillis was commissioned to capture an element of Michigan history with the sculpture Pine Stumps. After many of Michigan’s pine forests were harvested, farmers would clear stumps to create fields. These stumps were set on edge and used to create fences around the new fields. This sculpture was cast from a stump from Lena Meijer’s childhood farm.
